Overview
The SHURE GM8901 Digital Anemometer is a professional handheld wind speed and air temperature meter with a separate vane probe connected by a long coiled cable. It measures wind speed from 0.3 to 45 m/s with ±3% accuracy, shows air temperature at the same time, and indicates the wind scale level — all on a large backlit LCD.
The split design lets you put the probe directly into an air stream — an air-conditioner outlet, a fan, a vent, or an open window — while you hold the meter and read the display comfortably. It is a practical everyday tool for HVAC technicians, maintenance teams, engineers, and anyone who needs reliable airflow readings in the field.
How It Works
The GM8901 uses a rotating vane (impeller) sensor mounted in the handheld probe. When air passes through the vane, it spins at a speed proportional to the air velocity. The meter converts the rotation into a wind speed reading and displays it in real time, together with the air temperature measured at the probe.
Hold the probe so the air flows straight through the vane in the direction of the arrow, and the reading updates continuously. Use HOLD to freeze a value, or MAX/MIN/AVG to capture the peak, lowest, and average readings during a measurement.
Key Features

Calculating Air Volume
You can use the wind speed reading to work out the air volume of an outlet or duct:
- Air volume (m³/s) = wind speed (m/s) × outlet area (m²)
- Per minute – multiply the result by 60
- Per hour – multiply the result by 3,600
Example: 2.27 m/s × 0.25 m² outlet = 0.57 m³/s ≈ 34 m³/min ≈ 2,043 m³/h.
